What is ASMR? How Can Musicians Participate?

Niche alert: ASMR – Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response – ASMR isn’t so much a music niche/genre but more of a sonic genre. Have you ever experience tingles when someone was talking to you? A voice so soft or pleasant that you’ve experienced a physical sensation characterized by a tingling that typically begins in the head and scalp, and often moves down the spine and through the limbs. That’s ASMR and there’s a lot of variations of ASMR like:

Slow speech patterns, accents, soft-speaking voices and whispers
Lip sounds/smacking/eating
Clicking sounds, brushing sounds, white noise, etc.
Painting/drawing
Instructional videos
Watching other people performing simple tasks
Getting close, personal attention from someone (eye-exam, make-over, etc.)
Haircuts, people playing with your hair
Bob Ross.

But How does this apply to musicians you ask?

Well ASMR is a sonic art form and music is a sonic art form. If you have a particularly calming or interesting voice, perhaps you should try recording your own ASMR video. Plus I’m sure you have way more audio knowledge then most of these folks which will give you a big head start since this is a SONIC ART FORM not necessarily a visual one. Or take it even further and make ASMR music like this artist.

Here are few different examples below and for even more examples head over to Reddit.com/r/asmr to get started.

This genre is relatively young and has a lot of room to grow. If you get on this quick enough there could be a lot of opportunity to find a space for you and to find your audience. TRY IT OUT.
