Yahoo’s ‘YouTube’ May Debut This Summer (VentureBeat)
Yahoo is gearing up for a summer launch of its new rival YouTube video service, reports AdAge. News first leaked that Yahoo was interested in building its own streaming video site back in March, with the company apparently approaching many popular creators currently partnering with Google’s YouTube. AdAge Yahoo had intended to unveil the new service at its upfront presentation for advertisers in April, but contract issues have held the project back. But for video creators dissatisfied with YouTube, Yahoo has a compelling pitch: more generous revenue-sharing deals or fixed ad rates that are significantly higher than YouTube is currently delivering to creators. Business Insider Similar to YouTube, Yahoo video creators will be able to have their own channels. Yahoo’s video player will also be embeddable on other sites. MediaPost CEO Marissa Mayer clearly wants a bigger video role for Yahoo. Last year it was bidding for Hulu, when it appeared it was to be sold (it wasn’t). CNET A Yahoo spokeswoman said the company doesn’t comment on rumors or speculation. A message to Google and YouTube seeking comment wasn’t immediately returned. Investors were unruffled by the news, with Yahoo shares recently down 5 cents, or less than 1 percentage point, at $34.97.
